A quick heads up: On OctoÂber 3rd, StanÂford ConÂtinÂuÂing StudÂies will kick off an 8‑week online course called Did It MatÂter? Does It Now? The Music and CulÂture of the GrateÂful Dead. Led by David Gans (author of PlayÂing in the Band: An Oral and VisuÂal PorÂtrait of the GrateÂful Dead), the course will feaÂture a numÂber of speÂcial guests, includÂing Jesse Jarnow (host of The Good Ol’ GrateÂful DeadÂcast), DenÂnis McNalÂly (author of A Long Strange Trip: The Inside HisÂtoÂry of the GrateÂful Dead) and David Lemieux (GrateÂful Dead Archivist). Open to any adult, the course descripÂtion reads:
The GrateÂful Dead’s groundÂbreakÂing fusion of music, counÂterÂculÂture, and comÂmuÂniÂty engageÂment forged an endurÂing legaÂcy that tranÂscends genÂerÂaÂtions while shapÂing the evoÂluÂtion of music and culÂturÂal expresÂsion. NearÂly 30 years after the band played its last show, GrateÂful Dead music is more popÂuÂlar than ever—in both live and recordÂed form. This course invites stuÂdents to delve into the pheÂnomÂeÂnon that is the GrateÂful Dead through a capÂtiÂvatÂing exploÂration of the band’s hisÂtoÂry, music, and culÂturÂal impact.
The course will feaÂture a colÂlecÂtion of stoÂries and conÂverÂsaÂtions with scholÂars and hisÂtoÂriÂans, each offerÂing facts and perÂsonÂal perÂspecÂtives illuÂmiÂnatÂing every aspect of the GrateÂful Dead culÂture. TogethÂer, we will take a guidÂed tour of the music in the form of focused excerpts from live and stuÂdio perÂforÂmances to learn what makes the Dead’s music-makÂing unique and explore the broad musiÂcal uniÂverse the band creÂatÂed in its 30-year hisÂtoÂry.
FinalÂly, we’ll examÂine the Dead’s impact on sociÂety, divÂing into the band’s influÂence on art, litÂerÂaÂture, and social change, as well as its unique fan culÂture and the pheÂnomÂeÂnon of the DeadÂhead. By the end of the course, stuÂdents will have a well-roundÂed appreÂciÂaÂtion for the roots, strugÂgles, and mileÂstones that shaped the GrateÂful Dead’s traÂjecÂtoÂry, an underÂstandÂing of their proÂfound impact on music and culÂture, and insight into a legaÂcy that still resÂonates deeply today.
