Pull up the Wikipedia page for Mariya Takeuchi’s “PlasÂtic Love,” the 1984 sinÂgle now known for re-popÂuÂlarÂizÂing the genre of JapanÂese “city pop.” Then click the first of its links (not relatÂed to the lanÂguage of the artiÂcle itself), which leads to Takeuchi’s own page. If you keep folÂlowÂing that same proÂceÂdure, you’ll conÂtinÂue on to City Pop, then JapanÂese Pop Music, then PopÂuÂlar Music. Keep drilling down, and you’ll pass the very conÂcepts of music and sound, then enter the realms of physics, the sciÂenÂtifÂic method, logÂiÂcal propoÂsiÂtions, and the phiÂlosÂoÂphy of lanÂguage. This is one examÂple proÂvidÂed by the video above from YouTuÂber Not David, which invesÂtiÂgates whether all roads on Wikipedia evenÂtuÂalÂly lead to phiÂlosÂoÂphy.
There is, of course, a Wikipedia page about this, called “GetÂting to PhiÂlosÂoÂphy.” “FolÂlowÂing the first hyperÂlink in the main text of an EngÂlish Wikipedia artiÂcle, and then repeatÂing the process for subÂseÂquent artiÂcles, usuÂalÂly leads to the PhiÂlosÂoÂphy artiÂcle,” it says. “In FebÂruÂary 2016, this was true for 97% of all artiÂcles on Wikipedia (includÂing this one).” As for the rest, they “lead to an artiÂcle withÂout any outÂgoÂing wikÂilinks, to pages that do not exist, or get stuck in loops.” This is actuÂalÂly the case with the path startÂing from “PlasÂtic Love,” after PhiÂlosÂoÂphy of LanÂguage goes in cirÂcles around conÂcepts, abstracÂtion, and logÂic itself, nevÂer quite reachÂing PhiÂlosÂoÂphy propÂer.
Or at least that’s what hapÂpened for me today; it could go difÂferÂentÂly tomorÂrow, or even a few secÂonds from now. Ever since Wikipedia went live in 2001, its main difÂferÂence from othÂer encyÂcloÂpeÂdias has been that it’s conÂstantÂly changÂing, and the rate of that change has only increased over time. The “phiÂlosÂoÂphy game,” as Not David calls it, is at all times subÂject to breakÂage, but also to un-breakÂage. At norÂmal times, Orange Juice to PhiÂlosÂoÂphy takes thirÂteen steps, Apple Juice to PhiÂlosÂoÂphy takes fifÂteen steps; both the CalÂgary Flames and EdmonÂton OilÂers lie sixÂteen steps from PhiÂlosÂoÂphy. But things go hayÂwire if someÂone goes and, say, re-orders the links on the AwareÂness artiÂcle so PsyÂcholÂoÂgy comes first.
These things hapÂpen: Wikipedia is, after all, the encyÂcloÂpeÂdia that anyÂone can edit. And as you can see (at least as of this writÂing), AwareÂness now links first to PhiÂlosÂoÂphy again. These changes play havÂoc with the efforts of anyÂone tryÂing to map out the conÂnecÂtions between one part of Wikipedia and anothÂer, as Not David does in this video. But they don’t alter the funÂdaÂmenÂtal prinÂciÂples of netÂwork design, which his analyÂsis illuÂmiÂnates. As with the corÂpus calÂloÂsum, which conÂnects the two hemiÂspheres of the human brain, PhiÂlosÂoÂphy is less imporÂtant for what directÂly conÂnects to it than for its own funcÂtion as a conÂnecÂtor. And indeed, haven’t philosoÂphers always wantÂed to know how everyÂthing fits togethÂer?
