In 1885, Karl Benz built what’s now conÂsidÂered the first modÂern autoÂmoÂbile. AccordÂing to the MerÂcedes Benz webÂsite, the car feaÂtured a “comÂpact high-speed sinÂgle-cylinÂder four-stroke engine installed horÂiÂzonÂtalÂly at the rear, a tubuÂlar steel frame … and three wire-spoked wheels. The engine outÂput was 0.75 hp (0.55 kW).” Two years after its invenÂtion, Karl BenÂz’s wife Bertha proved that the car was ready for prime time, driÂving her earÂly Benz from Mannheim to Pforzheim. After that groundÂbreakÂing driÂve, the Benz went into proÂducÂtion, becomÂing the first comÂmerÂcialÂly availÂable autoÂmoÂbile in hisÂtoÂry.
Above, you can watch a car enthuÂsiÂast known as “Mr. Benz” take the nineÂteenth-cenÂtuÂry car for a spin. Below, watch a re-enactÂment of Bertha’s hisÂtoric driÂve.
