In 1973, Richard Davies directÂed BukowsÂki, a docÂuÂmenÂtary that TV Guide described as a “cinÂeÂma-verite porÂtrait of Los AngeÂles poet Charles BukowsÂki.” The film finds BukowsÂki, then 53 years old, “enjoyÂing his first major sucÂcess,” and “the camÂera capÂtures his remÂiÂnisÂcences … as he walks around his Los AngeÂles neighÂborÂhood. Blunt lanÂguage and a sly appreÂciÂaÂtion of his life form the core of the proÂgram, which includes obserÂvaÂtions by and about the women in his life.”
The origÂiÂnal film clocked in at 46 minÂutes. Then, two years latÂer, PBS released a “heavÂiÂly-editÂed 28-minute verÂsion of the film,” using alterÂnate scenes and a rearranged strucÂture. Renamed BukowsÂki Reads BukowsÂki, the film aired on ThursÂday, OctoÂber 16, 1975. And, true to its name, the film feaÂtures footage of BukowsÂki readÂing his poems, startÂing with “The Rat,” from the 1972 colÂlecÂtion MockÂingÂbird Wish Me Luck.
