The US Mint announced that it has “begun shipÂping the first coins in the AmerÂiÂcan Women QuarÂters (AWQ) ProÂgram.” And it all starts with the outÂstretched arms of poet Maya Angelou gracÂing the reverse of the quarÂter. The Mint writes:
A writer, poet, perÂformer, social activist, and teacher, Angelou rose to interÂnaÂtionÂal promiÂnence as an author after the pubÂliÂcaÂtion of her groundÂbreakÂing autoÂbiÂogÂraÂphy, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” Angelou’s pubÂlished works of verse, non-ficÂtion, and ficÂtion include more than 30 bestÂselling titles. Her remarkÂable career encomÂpassÂes dance, theÂater, jourÂnalÂism, and social activism. The recipÂiÂent of more than 30 honÂorary degrees, Angelou read “On the Pulse of MornÂing” at the 1992 inauÂguÂraÂtion of PresÂiÂdent Bill ClinÂton. Angelou’s readÂing marked the first time an African AmerÂiÂcan woman wrote and preÂsentÂed a poem at a PresÂiÂdenÂtial inauÂguÂraÂtion. In 2010, PresÂiÂdent Barack ObaÂma awardÂed Angelou the PresÂiÂdenÂtial Medal of FreeÂdom, and she was the 2013 recipÂiÂent of the LitÂerÂarÂiÂan Award, an honÂorary NationÂal Book Award for conÂtriÂbuÂtions to the litÂerÂary comÂmuÂniÂty.
AccordÂing to NPR, othÂer honÂorees in the series will include “astroÂnaut SalÂly Ride; actress Anna May Wong; sufÂfragÂist and politiÂcian Nina Otero-WarÂren; and Wilma Mankiller, the first female prinÂciÂpal chief of the CheroÂkee Nation. The coins feaÂturÂing the othÂer honÂorees will be shipped out this year through 2025.”
