PretÂty Much Pop hosts Mark LinÂsenÂmayÂer, EriÂca Spyres, and BriÂan Hirt are rejoined by our audio ediÂtor and resÂiÂdent rapÂper Tyler HisÂlop (rap name: “SacÂriÂfice”) to disÂcuss a form of enterÂtainÂment close to his heart: Two peoÂple starÂing each othÂer in the face in front of a crowd and takÂing lengthy turns insultÂing each othÂer in a loud voice using intriÂcate rhymes, refÂerÂences, jokes and even some culÂturÂal comÂmenÂtary and philoÂsophÂiÂcal spit-balling.
So what are the rules? How does modÂern batÂtle rap comÂpare to free-styling, the beefs aired on rap albums, and clasÂsic insult comÂeÂdy? What’s the appeal of this art form? Is it because of or despite the aggresÂsion involved? BatÂtle rap is regardÂed as a free speech zone, where anyÂthing’s fair game, but does that realÂly make sense?
A few relÂeÂvant films came up in the disÂcusÂsion:
- BodÂied (2017), a film writÂten by Alex Larsen (aka Kid Twist) and proÂduced by Eminem, feaÂturÂing sevÂerÂal curÂrent batÂtle rapÂpers doing their thing along with disÂcusÂsion by the charÂacÂters of the ethÂiÂcal issues involved
- 8 Mile (2002), a semi-autoÂbiÂoÂgraphÂiÂcal film starÂring Eminem, which disÂplays the oldÂer, free-styling over a beat type of batÂtle rapÂping
- RoxÂanne RoxÂanne (2017) a biopic about RoxÂanne Shante depictÂing hip-hop rivalÂries of the 1980s.
Here are some matchÂes Tyler recÂomÂmendÂed that also get menÂtioned:
- ConÂceitÂed vs. DumbÂfoundÂed. PerÂhaps the most viewed batÂtle of all time
- A 2x2 batÂtle: B. Dot/Geechi GotÂti vs. A. Ward/Loso. Note that the latÂter are “ChrisÂtÂian-based” rapÂpers.
- A comÂpliÂment batÂtle: Pat Stay vs. Rone.
- ImmacÂuÂlate vs. Soul. ImmacÂuÂlate is Tyler’s favorite batÂtler, and Soul is ScotÂtish.
- More: Pat Stay vs. CharÂron, Rone vs. Big T, The Saurus vs. DayÂlyt, ShotÂty HorÂroh vs. ArsonÂal, CalÂiÂcoe vs. Bigg K, ShotÂty HorÂroh vs. Tony D
- Not actuÂalÂly rap batÂtles: Trump vs. Biden, Keynes vs. Hayek
