What’s your relaÂtionÂship to music? Do you just embrace the pure sound, or do you care about who made that sound? One way of seeÂing where you fall on this issue is whether you care more for sinÂgles or to whole albums or careers by artists.
Ken StringfelÂlow, who co-fronts The Posies and was a memÂber of R.E.M. and Big Star, joins Mark LinÂsenÂmayÂer, EriÂca Spyres, and BriÂan Hirt to talk about what actuÂalÂly grabs us about music, whether being a musiÂcian yourÂself is a key facÂtor in whether you pay attenÂtion to the conÂtext of a song, how music gets to your ears, singers vs. songÂwritÂers, what we think about the notion of “genius,” and how this artist vs. song conÂflict relates to how we take in othÂer media (e.g. favorite film direcÂtors).
The ideas for this disÂcusÂsion mostÂly came from reflectÂing on our own expeÂriÂences and habits, but we did some warm-up research into:
- Artists who hate their hit song: PeoÂple, BBC, CheetSheet.com.
- ArtiÂcles about trends in music sales, such as “Will the SinÂgle Kill the Album” by Steven GutÂtenÂberg, CNet News
- VarÂiÂous artiÂcles who call musiÂcians “genius,” like this one about BritÂney Spears from The Guardian.
- Also, Ric Ocasek (from The Cars) R.I.P.
- QuinÂcy Jones comÂplainÂing about TayÂlor Swift
LisÂten to Mark interÂview Ken on NakedÂly ExamÂined Music, preÂsentÂing specifÂiÂcalÂly some of his solo, Posies, and Big Star songs. After that was recordÂing, Ken sang some harÂmonies on a tune on Mark’s last album, Mark LinÂt’s Dry Folk.
OthÂer refÂerÂences: “MidÂnight ConÂfesÂsions” by The Grass Roots, Lil Peep, Tom WaitÂs’s most popÂuÂlar album, Lou Reed is not a one-hit wonÂder, the scene in SlackÂer with a fan getÂting MadonÂna’s pubic hair, Damien Rice is still workÂing, the band Live reunitÂed, REM on Sesame Street (no, Ken is not on camÂera), Ken being “world music” by playÂing solo in forÂeign counÂtries.
