Are carÂtoons an inherÂentÂly juveÂnile art form? Even aniÂmaÂtion aimed at adults is still typÂiÂcalÂly conÂsidÂered genre fiction–a guilty pleasure–and the form enables tones and approachÂes that might simÂply be conÂsidÂered awful if preÂsentÂed as traÂdiÂtionÂal live action. So what’s the appeal?
Dee’s voice can be heard in subÂstanÂtial porÂtion of today’s carÂtoons, espeÂcialÂly for aniÂmal or monÂster noisÂes, like Boots in the new big-screen adapÂtaÂtion of Dora the ExplorÂer, Momo and Appa in The Last AirÂbenÂder, AniÂmal in the new MupÂpet Babies, etc. He’s also a deep thinker who proudÂly defends carÂtoons as proÂvidÂing priÂmal delights of humor, jusÂtice, and narÂraÂtive meanÂing.
Mark, EriÂca, and BriÂan engage Dee about his expeÂriÂence as a voice actor (e.g. as Klaus GerÂman fish in a Seth MacÂFarÂlane sit-com, figÂurÂing out what AdvenÂture Time was actuÂalÂly about, doing all the simÂiÂlar-but-disÂtinct voicÂes of the varÂiÂous clones in Clone Wars, comÂing up with a lanÂguage for The BoxÂtrolls, and recreÂatÂing Mel Blanc’s voicÂes in Space Jamand othÂer Looney Tunes projects), his role in colÂlabÂoÂraÂtive creÂation, the conÂnecÂtion between carÂtoons and vaudeÂville, how live-action films can be made “carÂtoonÂish,” graphÂic novÂels, carÂtoon music, and more. We also touch on Love & Robots, A ScanÂner DarkÂly, LarÂva, the docÂuÂmenÂtary I Know That Voice, and the 1972 film What’s Up, Doc? IntroÂducÂtion by ChickÂie.
We did read a few artiÂcles in prepaÂraÂtion for this about the pheÂnomÂeÂnon of adults watchÂing kid carÂtoons:
