It may seem like a dubiÂous honÂor to belong to a select group that includes some of my favorite creÂative peoÂple: art school dropouts. But while a failed endeavÂor can be painful, many a dropout learns that the expeÂriÂence is valuÂable not only because failÂures can fuel future sucÂcess, but also because the skills, techÂniques, and ways of thinkÂing one picks up in the first, “boot camp,” year of art school are wideÂly applicÂaÂble to every creÂative endeavÂor.
My favorite art school class was simÂply called “FounÂdaÂtions.” As the name implies, it dealt excluÂsiveÂly with basic mateÂriÂals and techniques—for joinÂing, paintÂing, sculptÂing, buildÂing, etc. One learns to think of large, comÂpliÂcatÂed, potenÂtialÂly overÂwhelmÂing projects of as reducible in some sense to mateÂriÂals and techÂniques. What am I workÂing with? What is the nature of this mateÂrÂiÂal and what are the best ways to shape it? What does it want to become?
These are pracÂtiÂcal, funÂdaÂmenÂtal quesÂtions artists ask themÂselves, no matÂter how big or high conÂcept their ideas. These days, the mateÂriÂals are likeÂly to be more virÂtuÂal than physÂiÂcal, or some creÂative mixÂture of the two. Still, simÂiÂlar conÂsidÂerÂaÂtions apply, as well as the basic skills of using colÂor, perÂspecÂtive, shadÂow, and line effecÂtiveÂly. In the free video tutoÂriÂals here, you can learn many of those skills withÂout attendÂing, or dropÂping out, of art school. They may not proÂvide a comÂplete arts eduÂcaÂtion, but they offer high qualÂiÂty lessons for artists needÂing to supÂpleÂment or refresh their skill sets.
At the top, Ahmed Aldoori explains the colÂor wheel and colÂor palettes in PhoÂtoÂshop. In othÂer videos on his YouTube chanÂnel, he gives tips on drawÂing hands (a parÂticÂuÂlar chalÂlenge for every artist), artist anatoÂmy, digÂiÂtal paintÂing, and more. AnothÂer chanÂnel, Draw with Chris, offers free and preÂmiÂum conÂtent for both digÂiÂtal and traÂdiÂtionÂal artists, such as the long video on shadÂing techÂnique above. He also has a popÂuÂlar two part series on life drawÂing (part 1 — part 2).
For artists and aniÂmaÂtors interÂestÂed in “semi realÂisÂtic, manÂga, and aniÂme style charÂacÂters, enviÂronÂments, and conÂcept art,” the LapuÂka chanÂnel feaÂtures many free short videos on the basics, such as their short intro to “1,2, and 3 point perÂspecÂtive” above. OthÂer videos teach “MulÂtiÂplyÂing and scalÂing in 1 point perÂspecÂtive,” “CutÂting in 1 point perÂspecÂtive,” “DrawÂing with a mouse,” and renÂderÂing cerÂtain popÂuÂlar aniÂme charÂacÂters.
All of these tutoÂriÂals come from a list comÂpiled by Deviantart user DamaiMikaz, who has helpÂfulÂly dividÂed sevÂerÂal dozen YouTube instrucÂtionÂal series into catÂeÂgories like “Art FunÂdaÂmenÂtals,” “TutoÂrÂiÂal & How to,” “DigÂiÂtal art softÂware,” “TraÂdiÂtionÂal Art,” and othÂers. Whether you’re an aspirÂing artist, dabÂbling amaÂteur, workÂing proÂfesÂsionÂal, or an art school dropout pickÂing the craft back up, you’ll find what you need here. Know of any othÂer free video resources not listÂed in this archive? Let us and our readÂers know in the comÂments and we’ll add the priÂmo picks to the list.
