WARNING: This film conÂtains extremeÂly fast editÂing, flashÂes of light, abrupt changes in image and sound.
Back in 2001, Matt Bucy had the inspiÂraÂtion to do someÂthing truÂly origÂiÂnal — take the entire WizÂard of Oz, cut it up, and put it back together–this time in alphaÂbetÂiÂcal order. And that’s preÂciseÂly what he did sevÂerÂal years latÂer, in 2004. A coder, Bucy creÂatÂed an app that made it easy to deconÂstruct the beloved 1939 film. He told Vox:
That [app] spit out a big text file with all the words and their locaÂtions in the film, which I then importÂed into a spreadÂsheet, sortÂed in alphaÂbetÂiÂcal and then chronoÂlogÂiÂcal order, and fed into anothÂer litÂtle proÂgram that took the sortÂed list and proÂduced the edit. So basiÂcalÂly, it was editÂed in Excel.…
All told, I think it took about sevÂen days spread out over a couÂple of months. DisÂasÂsemÂbly was mind-bendÂing in itself. It was litÂerÂalÂly hard to talk after movÂing word by word, or sylÂlaÂble by sylÂlaÂble, through the film. EngÂlish stopped soundÂing like lanÂguage, and at times I had to stop because I could not figÂure out what a word was — I just couldÂn’t hear it right.
When finalÂly alphaÂbetÂized, the film, says Bucy, had a surÂprisÂing enerÂgy to it. A cerÂtain je ne sais quoi. Yes it’s hard to describe. Maybe you can put your own words to it.
In 2016, Bucy finalÂly made the alphaÂbetÂized WizÂard of Oz availÂable to the rest of world. You can watch it here. And do heed the warnÂing above.

See, I get it. Some ideas are just not that great…
Tyson: you nailed it.
Just because you can do someÂthing is not necÂesÂsarÂiÂly jusÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtion for actuÂalÂly doing it.
