Last sumÂmer, we highÂlightÂed an almost unbeÂlievÂably rich resource for music fans: the Music Vault, a Youtube archive of 22,000 live conÂcert videos from a range of artists, spanÂning about four decades into the present. In a time of soarÂing tickÂet prices, the Music Vault allows us to catch a show at home for free, and to see bands we missed in their heyÂday perÂform on stages around the world. Last sumÂmer, I wrote, “enjoy revisÂitÂing the gloÂry days and rest assured, they aren’t going away anyÂtime soon.” But I spoke too soon, as many Music Vault videos (there were only 13,000 then) began disÂapÂpearÂing, along with the nosÂtalÂgia and hip curÂrenÂcy they offered. Well, now they’re back up and runÂning, and let’s hope it’s for good.
Unsurprisingly—given its assoÂciÂaÂtion with WolfÂgang’s Vault, a restoraÂtion and archive project that began with the colÂlecÂtion of legÂendary conÂcert proÂmotÂer Bill GraÂham—the Music Vault’s storeÂhouse includes perÂhaps more GrateÂful Dead mateÂrÂiÂal than anyÂthing else, like the nearÂly six hour WinÂterÂland conÂcert above from 1978. Check out the intro interÂview with now SenÂaÂtor, then comeÂdiÂan Al Franken, doing some politÂiÂcal humor for radio staÂtion KSAN. (And see Franken do anothÂer Dead intro skit in 1980 at Radio City Music Hall here.) There’s so much GrateÂful Dead in fact, they get their own chanÂnel. You’ll also find plenÂty more live clasÂsic rock shows from Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van MorÂriÂson, the Stones, Joe CockÂer, and more. (Check out this rare show from a pre-Van Halen SamÂmy Hagar in 1978.)
If that’s not what you’re into, there’s also plenÂty of punk and new wave, like the clasÂsic TalkÂing Heads perÂforÂmance of “Life DurÂing Wartime” above at the CapiÂtol TheÂatre from 1980 (see the comÂplete conÂcert here). You can also catch Iggy Pop in ’86, Blondie in ’79, the Ramones in ’78, Prince in ’82, or Green Day in ’94. You don’t get the cred from sayÂing you were there, whatÂevÂer that’s worth, but you get the thrill of seeÂing these artists in their prime, (almost) live and direct. FanÂcy more conÂtemÂpoÂrary fare? Check out the New Music DisÂcovÂery chanÂnel with live perÂforÂmances from curÂrent acts, curatÂed by DaytrotÂter and Paste MagÂaÂzine. Dig funk, soul, and regÂgae? They’ve got you covÂered, with shows from ParÂliaÂment-FunkadelÂic, JimÂmy Cliff, CurÂtis MayÂfield, and many more. See Bob MarÂley and the WailÂers do a stelÂlar renÂdiÂtion of “No Woman, No Cry” at the OakÂland AudiÂtoÂriÂum in 1979, below.
More of a jazz cat? No worÂries, Music Vault has an extenÂsive jazz chanÂnel feaÂturÂing everyÂone from Miles Davis to HerÂbie HanÂcock to Tony BenÂnet, and includÂing newÂer artists like vocalÂist Lizz Wright and trio The Bad Plus. (They’ve even got a surÂprisÂing perÂforÂmance from Orange is the New Black’s Lea DeLarÂia at the NewÂport Jazz FesÂtiÂval in 2002.) The Music Vault also hosts clasÂsic music docÂuÂmenÂtaries and interÂviews, like the Rolling Stones 1976 EuroÂpean Tour docÂuÂmenÂtary below. (OthÂer highÂlights include docÂuÂmenÂtary Last Days at the FillÂmore and a 1974 interÂview with Bill GraÂham.) WhatÂevÂer your thing is, you’ll probÂaÂbly find a litÂtle bit, or a lot, of it in this enorÂmous dataÂbase of live conÂcert film and video and othÂer feaÂtures (though almost no pop, r&b, or hip-hop). If you don’t, check back latÂer. The Music Vault promisÂes to add new “hand-curatÂed” conÂcert videos daiÂly.
