Ted Mills recentÂly told you all about the Google-powÂered virÂtuÂal tour of Abbey Road StuÂdios. What shouldÂn’t go withÂout menÂtion is the new, Google-powÂered virÂtuÂal tour of Robben Island — “the island where NelÂson ManÂdela and many of South Africa’s freeÂdom fightÂers were imprisÂoned durÂing their quest for equalÂiÂty.” Along with over 3,000 politÂiÂcal prisÂonÂers, NelÂson ManÂdela spent 18 years imprisÂoned here, much of the time conÂfined to a 8 x 7 foot prison cell. (Don’t forÂget ManÂdela also spent anothÂer nine years in Pollsmoor Prison and VicÂtor VerÂster Prison.)
All of the Robben Island tours are conÂductÂed by ex-prisÂonÂers. On the new virÂtuÂal tour, you will encounter VusumÂsi MconÂgo (see above), a memÂber of the anti-Apartheid moveÂment who was jailed on Robben Island from 1978 to 1990.
You can start the tour of the maxÂiÂmum secuÂriÂty prison and UNESCO World HerÂitage Site here.
