If you call yourÂself a film fan, you may have heard of TrailÂers from Hell, a video series whereÂin famous direcÂtors introÂduce and proÂvide comÂmenÂtary on trailÂers of the films they love, the films they’ve made, or both. You’ve defÂiÂniteÂly heard of it if you call yourÂself a fan of schlock film, since some of the TrailÂers from Hell include that of The Giant Claw with comÂmenÂtary by Joe Dante, that of Teen Wolf with comÂmenÂtary by Ti West, and that of One MilÂlion Years B.C. with comÂmenÂtary by John LanÂdis.
LanÂdis, direcÂtor of comeÂdies like AniÂmal House, The Blues BrothÂers, and (someÂhow, his favorite of the bunch) ComÂing to AmerÂiÂca, has recordÂed a great many episodes, and no surÂprise, since he enjoys schlock so much that he actuÂalÂly made a film of that name at the age of 21 — and then did a TrailÂer from Hell on it at the age of 63. But as one of those filmÂmakÂers posÂsessed of a cinephilÂia as strong as his masÂtery of the craft itself, his love for movies extends to the widest posÂsiÂble specÂtrum of theme and senÂsiÂbilÂiÂty: hence his episodes here on the decidÂedÂly non-schlocky CitÂiÂzen Kane, SunÂset BouleÂvard, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and La StraÂda.
Much about LanÂdis makes him exactÂly the kind of guy you want to hear talkÂing about movies, be they movies like FelliÂni SatyriÂcon or movies like King Kong vs. GodzilÂla. Not only does his sheer enthuÂsiÂasm for filmÂgoÂing come through in his every obserÂvaÂtion, but he brings to bear plenÂty of expeÂriÂence with the nuts and bolts of filmÂmakÂing. He disÂcussÂes, in the brief time these trailÂers allow, not just the qualÂiÂties of the feaÂtures but of the trailÂers themÂselves. He also throws in, when relÂeÂvant, fasÂciÂnatÂing anecÂdotes from his life as a movieÂgoÂer and moviemakÂer. And above it all, he does it with a wonkiÂly cinephilic sense of humor, as you’ll underÂstand right when you hear him introÂduce himÂself in each episode — and as you’d probÂaÂbly expect from the guy who directÂed KenÂtucky Fried Movie.
You can watch all the TrailÂers from Hell from LanÂdis, Dante, West, Karyn Kusama, Mick GarÂris, John BadÂham, and othÂers on their Youtube chanÂnel.

“Sweet CharÂiÂty” is a musiÂcal verÂsion of Fellini’s “Nights of Cabiria” not “La StraÂda”. C’mon LanÂdis, get it togethÂer.
A very erratÂic unfoÂcused comÂmenÂtary from a mediocre direcÂtor. ThankÂfulÂly I was lucky enough to have attendÂed classÂes with pasÂsionÂate and articÂuÂlate film scholÂars the likes of MorÂton MarÂcus who could define these films with respect and zest.
