Craig was the front-man of the brainy punk band ShudÂder to Think from the mid-’80s through the ’90s and has creÂatÂed music for many TV shows and films. He joins your hosts Mark LinÂsenÂmayÂer, EriÂca Spyres, and BriÂan Hirt due to his involveÂment with the curÂrent NBC musiÂcal dramÂeÂdy Zoey’s ExtraÂorÂdiÂnary Playlist, which along with Glee, Crazy Ex-GirlÂfriend, Nashville, Rise, etc. repÂreÂsents a new era of musiÂcals as mainÂstream TV.
Why are shows like this being creÂatÂed at this point in our culÂturÂal hisÂtoÂry? These shows all use some narÂraÂtive explaÂnaÂtion for why there’s singing (i.e. the songs are diagetic) instead of just havÂing the charÂacÂters sing as in a clasÂsic musiÂcal or a film like The GreatÂest ShowÂman or La La Land. Most of these also make heavy use of covÂer tunes and/or parÂoÂdies in a way that stage musiÂcals usuÂalÂly don’t. And of course there’s often a heavy use of autoÂtune and more star-based castÂing than is the norm for stage proÂducÂtions.
Some artiÂcles to proÂvide an overview of the topÂic:
- “The TV MusiÂcal: How Singing on the Small Screen Became So PopÂuÂlar” by ChrisÂtine LaskoÂdi
- “On TV’s New MusiÂcals, Every Episode Is OpenÂing Night” by AlexÂis Solosky
- “For the Love of God, Stop MakÂing Mediocre MusiÂcal TV Shows” by Alex Zaragoza
Note that Craig doesÂn’t creÂate the actuÂal songs that the cast memÂbers sing for Zoey’s, just the interÂstiÂtial music, but he’s writÂten heaps of songs and is in a great posiÂtion to talk with us about everyÂthing from Cop Rock to Mama Mia. We also touch on musiÂcal episodes in ComÂmuÂniÂty and Buffy the VamÂpire SlayÂer, BohemiÂan RhapÂsody, karaoke in film, Adam Schlesinger, Stop MakÂing Sense (also see David Byrne’s mobile band on ColÂbert) and a weird NetÂflix lip-sync draÂma called SoundÂtrack,
LisÂten to Craig talk about his own tunes on NakedÂly ExamÂined Music and watch his daiÂly SabÂbath SesÂsions at facebook.com/craigwedrenmusic or on YouTube. Hear the song he wrote for School of Rock.
