Have you ever wonÂdered what the WiFi sigÂnal looks like around your office, school, or local cafĂ©? In this video, Timo Arnall, Jørn KnutÂsen, and Einar Sneve MarÂtÂiÂnussen show you the invisÂiÂble. And they pulled this off by buildÂing a WiFi meaÂsurÂing rod, meaÂsurÂing four meters in length, that can visuÂalÂize WiFi sigÂnals around Oslo, NorÂway with the help of long expoÂsure phoÂtogÂraÂphy.
What’s fasÂciÂnatÂing to see is how the WiFi sigÂnals vary across the city. Away from resÂiÂdenÂtial buildÂings, the drop-off in WiFi strength is steep. On the othÂer hand, the WiFi sigÂnal is dense around comÂmerÂcial and acaÂdÂeÂmÂic buildÂings. The amazÂing visuÂalÂizaÂtion gives us a glimpse into the comÂplex relaÂtionÂships between WiFi netÂworks and the physÂiÂcal enviÂronÂments underÂpinÂning them.
