On 18 June 2009, NASA launched the Lunar ReconÂnaisÂsance Orbiter (LRO) from Cape CanaverÂal to conÂduct invesÂtiÂgaÂtions that would pave the way for future lunar exploÂration. The main objecÂtives? To scout for safe and proÂducÂtive landÂing sites, locate potenÂtial resources (with speÂcial attenÂtion to the posÂsiÂbilÂiÂty of water ice) and charÂacÂterÂize the effects of proÂlonged expoÂsure to lunar radiÂaÂtion. All along, the LRO has colÂlectÂed sciÂenÂtifÂic data about the moon’s topogÂraÂphy and comÂpoÂsiÂtion, resultÂing in some of the most specÂtacÂuÂlar images ever takÂen of the moon. NASA’s GodÂdard Space Flight CenÂter has assemÂbled some of these images into a wonÂderÂful aniÂmatÂed tour of the moon.
