DecemÂber 2, 1997. ExactÂly ten years after his first visÂit to Moscow, jazz legÂend Dave Brubeck returned to perÂform before the facÂulÂty and stuÂdents of the Moscow ConÂserÂvaÂtoÂry. DurÂing his conÂcert, an audiÂence memÂber asked him to improÂvise on the old RussÂian sea shanÂty “Ej, Uhnem.” About two minÂutes into the improÂviÂsaÂtion, a young vioÂlinÂist rose from his seat and startÂed to play along. You just have to love DavÂe’s surÂprised look at 2:09.
This young man turned out to be a stuÂdent at the conÂserÂvaÂtoÂry. His name is Denis Kolobov and he is now a vioÂlinÂist of interÂnaÂtionÂal renown. Denis must have musÂtered up all of his courage to cut into the perÂforÂmance of one of the great jazz pianists. But the day before, French jazz vioÂlinÂist StĂ©phane GrapÂpelÂli had died in Paris and Denis decidÂed to honÂor GrapÂpelÂli’s memÂoÂry in this way. What a great idea!
