Watch the First Animations of Peanuts: Commercials for the Ford Motor Company (1959–1961)

Bill Wat­ter­son, cre­ator of arguably the last great com­ic strip, Calvin and Hobbes, wrote the fol­low­ing about per­haps the great­est com­ic strip ever. “Peanuts pret­ty much defines the mod­ern com­ic strip, so even now it’s hard to see it with fresh eyes. The clean, min­i­mal­ist draw­ings, the sar­cas­tic humor, the unflinch­ing emo­tion­al hon­esty….” Charles Schulz, the artis­tic force behind Peanuts, fun­neled a life­time of lone­li­ness and emo­tion­al pain into these spare lit­tle draw­ings, cre­at­ing a strip that was bleak­ly fun­ny, philo­soph­i­cal and real. Char­ac­ters like the social­ly inept Char­lie Brown or the bossy though odd­ly trag­ic Lucy con­nect­ed with audi­ences in a way that few ever did.

The one way that Wat­ter­son and Schulz dif­fered, and dif­fered great­ly, was in the area of mer­chan­dis­ing. While Wat­ter­son famous­ly refused to license any of his char­ac­ters (those praying/peeing Calvin car decals, it might sur­prise you to learn, are not offi­cial­ly sanc­tioned), Schulz licensed his cre­ations far and wide. For those who grew up in the ‘70s, a Snoopy plush toy was sim­ply de rigueur. The Peanuts char­ac­ters hawked Dol­ly Madi­son snack cakes, MetLife insur­ance, and Wendy’s kids meals. And those spon­sor­ship deals paid spec­tac­u­lar­ly well. By the time that Schulz died in Feb­ru­ary 2000 — the night before the final Peanuts strip was to go to print — he had report­ed­ly earned over the course of his life $1.1 bil­lion dol­lars.

The first instance of Char­lie, Snoopy and the gang being cor­po­rate spokeschar­ac­ters hap­pened to be also the first time they were ani­mat­ed. The Ford Motor Com­pa­ny licensed them in 1959 to do TV com­mer­cials along with intros to the Ten­nessee Ernie Ford Show. You can watch them above. Prob­a­bly the most strik­ing thing about the com­mer­cials is that the adults are intel­li­gi­ble, not the incom­pre­hen­si­ble mut­ed trum­pet bleats of the Peanuts movies.

The spots proved to be such a suc­cess that Schulz and ani­ma­tor Bill Melén­dez were soon pro­duc­ing half-hour long TV spe­cials, includ­ing the Emmy-win­ning A Char­lie Brown Christ­mas in 1965. In a 1984 inter­view, Melén­dez talked about work­ing with Schulz, who went by the nick­name of “Sparky,” for those first Ford spots.

Well, I was doing Ford com­mer­cials at J. Wal­ter Thomp­son when it was decid­ed that Char­lie Brown would be the spokesman for the Ford Fal­con. I was told Charles Schulz was very shy and ret­i­cent about com­mer­cial­iz­ing his strip. So I went to San Fran­cis­co and met Sparky and we hit it off. I told him what we did, and he nod­ded and said, “All right, we’ll try it.” He was very leery of get­ting involved with “Hol­ly­wood types” as he used to call us.

Of course he under­stands that his draw­ings are flat, two-dimen­sion­al designs, and that, for exam­ple, the front view is very dif­fer­ent from the side view. They are not three-dimen­sion­al char­ac­ters. You can’t turn them around the way we used to turn the Walt Dis­ney char­ac­ters, who were designed to be round and three-dimen­sion­al. To ani­mate Peanuts char­ac­ters we have to be more inven­tive, because we tend not to be real­is­tic. We don’t try to ape real live action as we did in ani­mat­ing Don­ald Duck and Mick­ey Mouse.

I imag­ine Sparky must have been curi­ous about how we were going to do it, but he nev­er gave us any kind of a hint or any­thing at all about what he want­ed. So we showed him how we thought it should move, how we thought they should turn, how we thought they should walk and he accept­ed every­thing. From then on we hit it off pret­ty well.

Jonathan Safran Foer, Toni Morrison & Steven Pinker Cultivate Thought on Chipotle’s Cups and Bags

If you walk into Chipo­tle, order a drink, and look at the cup, you might see the fol­low­ing lit­er­ary text:

I took my heart out and gave it to a writer made heart­less by fame, some­one who need­ed it to pump blood into veins des­ic­cat­ed by the suck and roar of crowds slob­ber­ing or poi­son­ing or lick­ing up the red froth they mis­take for hap­pi­ness because hap­pi­ness looks just like a heart paint­ed on a valen­tine cup or tat­tooed on an arm that has nev­er held a vic­tim or com­fort­ed a hurt friend. I took it out and the space it left in my chest was sutured tight like the skin of a drum.

As my own pulse failed, I fell along with a soft show­er of rain typ­i­cal in this place.

Lying there, col­lapsed under trees bor­der­ing the man­sion of the famous one I saw a but­ter­fly bro­ken by the slam of a sin­gle rain­drop on its wings fold and flut­ter as it hit a pool of water still fight­ing for the lift that is its nature. I closed my eyes expect­ing to dis­solve into stars or lava or a bru­tal sequoia when the famous writer appeared and leaned down over me. Lift­ing my head he put his lips on mine and breathed into my mouth one word and then anoth­er, and anoth­er words upon words then num­bers, then notes. I swal­lowed it all while my mind filled with lan­guage, mea­sure, music, knowl­edge.

These gifts from the famous writer were so seduc­tive, so all encom­pass­ing they seemed to make a heart irrel­e­vant.

Oth­er cups and brown paper bags fea­ture short thoughts by Mal­colm Glad­well, George Saun­ders, Steven Pinker, Michael Lewis, and Sheri Fink, among oth­ers. The ini­tia­tive, dubbed Cul­ti­vat­ing Thought, was actu­al­ly the brain­child of nov­el­ist Jonathan Safran Foer (Every­thing Is Illu­mi­nat­ed and Extreme­ly Loud and Incred­i­bly Close). Years ago, he met with Chipotle’s CEO and posed the ques­tion: why not give peo­ple a lit­tle food for thought on your cups and brown paper bags? Just last week, the Cul­ti­vat­ing Thought Author series was launched, with Safran Foer serv­ing as its “cura­tor.”

Vi Hart Explains & Defends Net Neutrality in a New Doodle-Filled Video

Vi Hart is back at it again. Hart has a knack for demys­ti­fy­ing com­plex con­cepts with her visu­al­ly-rich math­e­mat­i­cal videos. She has pre­vi­ous­ly tack­led Stravin­sky and Schoenberg’s 12-Tone Com­po­si­tions and the Space-Time Con­tin­u­um. This week, she’s tak­ing on the con­cept of Net Neu­tral­i­ty. The FCC will soon con­sid­er whether it wants to end the era of net neu­tral­i­ty and the open web — some­thing that could have far-reach­ing con­se­quences for you. The web keeps get­ting more and more cor­po­ra­tized (even by com­pa­nies that claim to sup­port net neu­tral­i­ty). And by killing net neu­tral­i­ty, the FCC can offi­cial­ly ensure that big cor­po­ra­tions run the show.

In the video above, Hart explains the con­cept of net neu­tral­i­ty and why it’s impor­tant to defend. On her blog, she also includes a lot of addi­tion­al resources — includ­ing more videos that explain net neu­tral­i­ty, plus infor­ma­tion on how you can tell your polit­i­cal rep­re­sen­ta­tives to keep the web open.

Slavoj Žižek on the Feel-Good Ideology of Starbucks

Back in 2010, we pre­sent­ed an ani­mat­ed video where Slavoj Žižek, our favorite Sloven­ian the­o­rist, iden­ti­fied a new trend in mod­ern cap­i­tal­ism. Nowa­days, mar­keters have found a crafty way to rework Max Weber’s Protes­tant Eth­ic. They tell us we can achieve per­son­al redemp­tion not through hard work and amass­ing sav­ings, but by con­sum­ing the right prod­ucts. When you buy eco-friend­ly prod­ucts, fair trade goods, or prod­ucts that yield some kind of char­i­ta­ble div­i­dend, you don’t have to think twice about the cost of your con­sumerism. Not when you’ve done some good and earned your­self some good cap­i­tal­ist kar­ma.

This line of think­ing returns in Žižek’s new film The Per­vert’s Guide to Ide­ol­o­gy, where, once again, he focus­es on one of the world’s most effec­tive mar­ket­ing oper­a­tions, Star­bucks. This, after hav­ing seem­ing­ly imbibed a “Ven­ti” or “Trenta” por­tion of the prod­uct.

Steve Jobs on the Rise of the Personal Computer: A Rare 1990 Interview

In ear­ly 1990 Steve Jobs grant­ed a very rare inter­view to the mak­ers of a PBS NOVA minis­eries called The Machine that Changed the World.

The pro­duc­ers of the series had a tough time get­ting Jobs to talk with them. They had already inter­viewed Bill Gates, Steve Woz­ni­ak and most of the oth­er found­ing fathers of the per­son­al com­put­ing rev­o­lu­tion, but the reclu­sive Jobs brushed off all requests. “As we start­ed the series,” writes Nan­cy Linde at the NOVA Web site, “we were warned time and time again. ‘You ‘ll nev­er get Steve Jobs on cam­era.’ ”  After mul­ti­ple requests, Jobs final­ly replied with a terse “No, thank you.” Linde con­tin­ues:

But we had an ace up our sleeve by the name of Robert Noyce. A leg­end in the com­put­er world as the co-inven­tor of the microchip and co-founder of Intel, Bob Noyce was a strong sup­port­er of The Machine That Changed the World and served on our advi­so­ry board. Like most in Sil­i­con Val­ley, Steve Jobs revered Bob Noyce, and a one-para­graph let­ter from Noyce changed Jobs’ “no” into a “yes,” giv­ing our series one of a lim­it­ed num­ber of inter­views Steve Jobs gave in his short life­time.

At the time of the inter­view, Jobs was 35 years old and about mid­way through his 11-year exile from Apple. He was work­ing with NeXT, the com­put­er com­pa­ny he found­ed after being pushed out of Apple in 1985. In keep­ing with the theme of the minis­eries, the inter­view deals most­ly with the big pic­ture. Jobs talks about the role of the com­put­er in human life, and about the emer­gence and evo­lu­tion of per­son­al com­put­ing. He tells the sto­ry of how he and his ear­ly friend Woz­ni­ak (referred to in the inter­view as “Woz”) turned a hob­by into a busi­ness and devel­oped the Apple I and Apple II com­put­ers. He very briefly touch­es on the first two dri­vers of the per­son­al com­put­ing rev­o­lu­tion — spread­sheets and desk­top pub­lish­ing — before talk­ing at length about the rev­o­lu­tion that was yet to come: net­worked com­put­ing. The World Wide Web had bare­ly been cre­at­ed in 1990, and Jobs is fair­ly pre­scient in his pre­dic­tions of how the link­ing of com­put­ers would change the world.

Dewars Channels the Ghost of Charles Bukowski to Sell Scotch

In 1993, the GAP used the ghost of Jack Ker­ouac to help sell khakis to desk jock­eys across the nation. That was odd. 20 years lat­er, Dewars has called upon Charles Bukows­ki, dead since 1994, to ped­dle Scotch. That makes com­plete sense. As you may recall, Bukows­ki once told Sean Penn in a 1987 Inter­view mag­a­zine piece: “Alco­hol is prob­a­bly one of the great­est things to arrive upon the earth — along­side of me. Yes…these are two of the great­est arrivals upon the sur­face of the earth. So…we get along.” Bukows­ki liked to drink. He also liked to talk about his mem­o­rable hang­overs. Dead or alive, Bukows­ki has the creds to sell Scotch.

As the Dewars ad rolls (above), you’ll hear lines from Bukowski’s poem “so you want to be a writer?” (below). And if you’re famil­iar with the poem, you’ll notice that the nar­ra­tion in the com­mer­cial is abridged. They’ve removed var­i­ous lines refer­ring to the writ­ing life, mak­ing it so that the nar­ra­tion speaks to a broad­er audi­ence. Rock climbers. Motor­cy­cle mechan­ics. Musi­cians. Jour­nal­ists. Peo­ple who aspire — or need to be inspired — to “live true.”

Death of An Adjunct: A Sobering, True Story

The Pitts­burgh Post-Gazette ran a sad and galling sto­ry yes­ter­day about Mary Mar­garet Vojtko who died of a heart attack at the age of 83. At the time of her death, Daniel Kova­lik writes:

She was receiv­ing radi­a­tion ther­a­py for the can­cer that had just returned to her, she was liv­ing near­ly home­less because she could not afford the upkeep on her home, which was lit­er­al­ly falling in on itself, and now, she explained, she had received anoth­er indig­ni­ty — a let­ter from Adult Pro­tec­tive Ser­vices telling her that some­one had referred her case to them say­ing that she need­ed assis­tance in tak­ing care of her­self.

Vojtko had end­ed up in pover­ty after spend­ing 25 years work­ing as an adjunct pro­fes­sor of French at Duquesne Uni­ver­si­ty, a Catholic school locat­ed in Pitts­burgh, Pa. Until she was ter­mi­nat­ed last spring, she worked “on a con­tract basis from semes­ter to semes­ter, with no job secu­ri­ty, no ben­e­fits and with a salary of between $3,000 and just over $3,500 per three-cred­it course.” When teach­ing three class­es a semes­ter and two dur­ing the sum­mer, Vojtko nev­er earned more than $25,000 a year. (A pit­tance com­pared to the pay pack­age of Duques­ne’s pres­i­dent — report­ed­ly about $700,000 per year in salary and ben­e­fits.) Mean­while, Duquesne thwart­ed attempts by adjuncts to union­ize, claim­ing that the school should have a reli­gious exemp­tion.

As Kova­lik goes on to note: “Adjuncts now make up well over 50 per­cent of the fac­ul­ty at col­leges and uni­ver­si­ties.” And that sta­tis­tic is bound to increase. You can — and should — read the full sto­ry at the Post-Gazette. Read Death of an Adjunct here.
