Bill Nye will tell you that he’s a man on a misÂsion. He’s out there tryÂing to “help fosÂter a sciÂenÂtifÂiÂcalÂly litÂerÂate sociÂety, to help peoÂple everyÂwhere underÂstand and appreÂciÂate the sciÂence that makes our world work.” From 1993 to 1998, Nye hostÂed Bill Nye the SciÂence Guy, a Disney/PBS chilÂdren’s sciÂence show that won 18 Emmys along the way. A gradÂuÂate of CorÂnell and a stuÂdent of Carl Sagan, Nye has also preÂsentÂed shows on the SciÂence ChanÂnel, the DisÂcovÂery ChanÂnel and othÂer media outÂlets.
If you’re familÂiar with Bill Nye, you’ll know that he’s not exactÂly an in-your-face kind of sciÂenÂtist. He’s no Richard Dawkins. Nye is mild-manÂnered, affaÂble and wears a bow tie. But, like Dawkins, he’ll tell you that if you deny evoÂluÂtion, you’re not livÂing in the world of basic facts. And if you teach creÂationÂism to kids, you’re not preparÂing them to comÂpete in a world where sciÂenÂtifÂic litÂerÂaÂcy means everyÂthing. That bodes ill for your kids in parÂticÂuÂlar, and for AmerÂiÂca’s future more genÂerÂalÂly.
Now you might be inclined to say that AmerÂiÂca has always had creÂationÂists, and that didÂn’t stop the counÂtry from becomÂing an ecoÂnomÂic and milÂiÂtary superÂpowÂer. PerÂhaps that’s true. But you need to recall this. AmerÂiÂca reached its zenith when every othÂer powÂer had blown themÂselves to smithereens. We were the only game in town. And it almost didÂn’t matÂter what we thought, or how much we thought. We just needÂed to show up to work. NowaÂdays, we don’t have that luxÂuÂry. We face stiff comÂpeÂtiÂtion from ambiÂtious nations that take sciÂence and eduÂcaÂtion seriÂousÂly. A counÂtry that scoffs at sciÂenÂtifÂic reaÂsonÂing, that disÂmissÂes it all as “elitÂist,” has only one way to go, and that’s down. God help us.
