You may rememÂber Nina Paley, about whose movie Sita Sings the Blues we postÂed back in 2009. If you folÂlow aniÂmaÂtion, you cerÂtainÂly rememÂber her, since she put togethÂer that feaÂture-length, jazz vocal-scored, autoÂbiÂoÂgraphÂiÂcal adapÂtaÂtion of the IndiÂan myth the Ramayana almost entireÂly with her own set of self-taught skills. For some time now, Paley’s fans have known that her next major project, Seder-Masochism, will retell the stoÂry of ExoÂdus using narÂraÂtion assemÂbled from genÂuine Passover Seder recordÂings. This we learned when Paley chose to fund the first phase of the project on KickÂstarter. We can now watch, embedÂded above, the very first scene she has comÂpletÂed: “This Land is Mine,” a brief and bloody musiÂcal hisÂtoÂry of the terÂriÂtoÂry called, dependÂing upon your perÂspecÂtive, Israel, PalesÂtine, Canaan, or LevÂant.
HelpÂfulÂly, Paley has writÂten up a guide to this sequence’s many playÂers: you’ve got the CanaanÂites, who kill EarÂly Man; the EgpyÂtians, who kill the CanaanÂites; the AssyrÂiÂans, who kill the EgypÂtians; and so on forÂward through the annals until we arrive at the modÂern-day batÂtles between “PLO/Hamas/Hezbollah,” the State of Israel, and “guerrillas/freedom fighters/terrorists.” AnyÂone who even occaÂsionÂalÂly glances toward the news knows full well how large conÂflict and death loom today over this parÂticÂuÂlar slice of the world, but through Paley’s high-body-count aniÂmatÂed interÂpreÂtaÂtion of the place’s hisÂtoÂry, we can see that it was ever thus. She flinchÂes not from her subÂject matÂter’s overÂwhelmÂing vioÂlence, nor from her own tenÂdenÂcy to inject it with humor. This bodes well for what she’ll do with the rest of the stoÂry, colÂlect it as she will from as many Seders as she can attend. The makÂings, truÂly, of an ExoÂdus difÂferÂent from all othÂer ExoÂdusÂes.
