GivÂen that water covÂers roughÂly 70% of our planÂet, it makes sense that Google Earth should take the oceans into account. Thanks to a partÂnerÂship with the CalÂiÂforÂnia AcadÂeÂmy of SciÂences, Google Earth now offers, accordÂing to the comÂpaÂny blog, detailed maps of the ocean floor “so you can actuÂalÂly drop below the surÂface and explore the nooks and cranÂnies of the seafloor in 3D.” You’ll also get “thouÂsands of data points includÂing videos and images of ocean life, details on the best surf spots, logs of real ocean expeÂdiÂtions, and much more.”
In this latÂest release of Google Earth, you’ll also find detailed maps of the planÂet Mars, plus (rather amazÂingÂly) some funcÂtionÂalÂiÂty that lets you see how landÂscapes have changed over time. How does San FranÂcisÂco look today as comÂpared to 50 years ago? You should now be able to find out.
You can get more inforÂmaÂtion on these new addiÂtions here on Google’s Blog. Also, you can see a video report from The Wall Street JourÂnal that gives you a visuÂal taste of Google Earth 5.0.
