Time-travÂel rules in The TerÂmiÂnaÂtor franÂchise are notoÂriÂousÂly inconÂsisÂtent. Is it posÂsiÂble for someÂone from the future to travÂel backÂwards to change events, givÂen the paraÂdox that with a changed future, the travÂelÂer wouldÂn’t then have had the probÂlem to try to come back and fix? NeiÂther the closed-loop series of events in the first TerÂmiÂnaÂtor film nor the changed (postÂponed) future in the secÂond make sense, and matÂters just get worse through the subÂseÂquent films.
Mark LinÂsenÂmayÂer, EriÂca Spyres, and BriÂan Hirt are joined by BriÂan’s brothÂer and co-author Ken GerÂber to talk through the varÂiÂous time travÂel ruleÂsets and plot sceÂnarÂios (a good starter list is at tvtropes.org), covÂerÂing Dr. Who, Back to the Future, LoopÂer, Dark (the GerÂman TV show), time loop films a la GroundÂhog Day (Edge of TomorÂrow, HapÂpy Death Day), time-travÂel comeÂdies (Future Man), hisÂtorÂiÂcal tourism (Mr. Peabody and SherÂman), TimeÂcop’s “The same matÂter canÂnot occuÂpy the same space,” using time-travÂel to senÂtiÂmenÂtalÂize (About Time) or clone yourÂself (see that Brak Show episode about avoidÂing homeÂwork), and freezÂing time (like in the old TwiÂlight Zone).
