The pleaÂsure of lisÂtenÂing to clasÂsiÂcal music, as every clasÂsiÂcal music afiÂcionaÂdo knows, goes well beyond lisÂtenÂing to one’s favorite piece. You can’t have a favorite piece withÂout havÂing a favorite perÂforÂmance of that piece, played by cerÂtain musiÂcians, presided over by a cerÂtain conÂducÂtor, and recordÂed in a cerÂtain hall. And even so, many othÂer recordÂings of that piece may well exist that you haven’t heard yet, one of which could one day usurp your perÂsonÂal top spot. About many comÂpoÂsiÂtions there also exists a near-infiÂnite amount to learn and underÂstand, espeÂcialÂly for those of us with musiÂcal trainÂing or score-readÂing abilÂiÂty.
This aesÂthetÂiÂcalÂly and intelÂlecÂtuÂalÂly rewardÂing process of seekÂing out and comÂparÂing — and indeed, the enterÂprise of clasÂsiÂcal music-lisÂtenÂing itself — has become much easÂiÂer with the advent of resources like the InterÂnaÂtionÂal Music Score Library Project. FoundÂed in 2006, it has by this point expandÂed to conÂtain “123,134 works, 404,963 scores, 46,610 recordÂings, 15,404 comÂposers, and 445 perÂformÂers,” all online and many free for the downÂloadÂing. Just search for the name of a piece or comÂposÂer with the winÂdow on the upper right — WolfÂgang Amadeus Mozart, for instance — and the IMSP will show you all the relatÂed items it curÂrentÂly has.
Mozart’s well-known and wideÂly heard 1787 comÂpoÂsiÂtion Eine kleine NachtÂmusik (known numerÂiÂcalÂly as K.525) has its own page in the IMSP’s dataÂbase, where you’ll find not just 29 scores and parts and 28 arrangeÂments and tranÂscripÂtions in the sheet music secÂtion but two comÂplete perÂforÂmances in the recordÂing secÂtion: one by the Boston chamÂber orchesÂtra A Far Cry and one by the NetherÂlands’ RoyÂal ConÂcertÂgeÂbouw OrchesÂtra. You can lisÂten to them right on the site, or downÂload them by first clickÂing on the down arrow (↓) next to the words “comÂplete perÂforÂmance,” then on the down arrow (↓) that appears to the right of the volÂume conÂtroller when the file starts playÂing.
Or if you’re not in the mood for a litÂtle night music, perÂhaps the IMSP can interÂest you in LudÂwig van Beethoven’s SymÂphoÂny No. 5 or Johann SebasÂtÂian Bach’s GoldÂberg VariÂaÂtions. But then, as the San FranÂcisÂco SymÂphoÂny’s Michael Tilson Thomas once said, “You can’t have Bach, Mozart and Beethoven as your favorite comÂposers. They simÂply define what music is!” So if you’d preÂfer to go beyond the defÂiÂnÂiÂtion and hear more of the variÂaÂtions clasÂsiÂcal music has to offer — variÂaÂtions being one of the prime sources of its aforeÂmenÂtioned pleaÂsure — the IMSP’s vast archive has plenÂty of recordÂings to satÂisÂfy that desire as well, with more added all the time.
