Last year, Dave BrubeckÂ’s jazz stanÂdard, Take Five, turned 50 years old. (Watch his 1961 perÂforÂmance above.) And, today, the artist celÂeÂbrates his 90th birthÂday. ThroughÂout his 80s, Brubeck conÂtinÂued to perÂform across the US (we have him playÂing Take Five at the MonÂtreÂal Jazz FesÂtiÂval just last year) and onward he plans to go — although his tourÂing was recentÂly haltÂed by paceÂmakÂer surgery. To comÂmemÂoÂrate his birthÂday, TurnÂer ClasÂsic Movies will preÂmiere tonight In His Own Sweet Way, a docÂuÂmenÂtary revisÂitÂing BrubeckÂ’s life and music. And NPR’s Fresh Air has re-aired a 1999 interÂview where (in addiÂtion to his music) Brubeck talks about his earÂly days on a CalÂiÂforÂnia catÂtle ranch, and his first love: rodeo ropÂing. The conÂverÂsaÂtion runs 34 minÂutes. You can lisÂten right here.
