The vast majorÂiÂty of AmerÂiÂcans have only a remote sense of what Iraqis
are expeÂriÂencÂing these days. We hear about peoÂple dying daiÂly — 10 in a marÂket here, 30 in a mosque attack there — but it comes across as staÂtisÂtics, as numÂbers divorced from a realÂiÂty that we can empathize with. In past wars, you could blame this failÂure to underÂstand the war in conÂcrete, human terms on govÂernÂment cenÂsorÂship and timid reportÂing. But, with this war, the pubÂlic doesÂn’t have that excuse. This is the first major AmerÂiÂcan war fought in the age of the interÂnet, and, as a result, a fuller picÂture of the war has always been just a Google search away. With that thought in mind, I have pulled togethÂer some digÂiÂtal resources that paint a fuller picÂture of what the US invaÂsion has givÂen everyÂday Iraqis. In clear terms, you can see what life realÂly looks like in this newÂfound democÂraÂcy.
PodÂcast: For starters, I would highÂly recÂomÂmend this recent podÂcast from Open Source, a PRI proÂducÂtion. It includes Iraqis and experts talkÂing about the disÂloÂcaÂtion of many Iraqi citÂiÂzens, and the growÂing refugee criÂsis in SyrÂia and JorÂdan. (Note: this podÂcast requires iTunes, which you can downÂload for free here.)
